Air Mauritius has cancelled several flights due to the sustained approach of intense tropical cyclone Freddy in the region.
In a bulletin released on 19th February 2023, Air Mauritius announced the cancellation of various flights scheduled on 19th, 20th, and 21st February.
The affected flights include those operating between Mauritius and Paris, London, Mumbai, Kuala Lumpur, and Johannesburg, as well as those between Mauritius and Reunion. All flights to and from Rodrigues on 20th February are also cancelled.
Passengers affected by the cancellations are advised to contact Air Mauritius for further information.
Air Mauritius will also provide regular updates on the situation through its website and other communication channels. The airline continues to monitor the situation closely and work closely with authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of passengers.
Meanwhile, all outbound flights scheduled on 19th February from Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (SSR), with the exception of Rodrigues, will operate normally. The airline will operate flights to Reunion, Mumbai, and Paris as scheduled on 19th February. Flight MK 249, Reunion-Mauritius, scheduled on 20th February at 07h00 local time has been preponed to 19th February 2023 and will now operate as flight MK 1249 at 23h25 local time. It is expected to arrive in Mauritius at 00h15 local time on 20th February 2023.
Passengers traveling to and from the affected areas are advised to keep track of updates from Air Mauritius and other relevant authorities to stay informed about the status of their flights.
The Mauritius Meteorological Services (MMS) issued a Class 3 cyclone warning, saying the estimated gusts in the centre of Cyclone Freddy could be around 300km/h.
It said the storm was centred about 275 kilometres to the northeast of Mauritius and moving west-southwest at an increased speed of about 30 kilometres an hour.
As a result, the MMS is strictly advising people not to go to sea while public transport has also been halted, and people are urged to take all necessary precautions to stay safe.
