Air Mauritius CEO Probe Expands Amidst Wider Scrutiny

The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) in Mauritius is intensifying its investigations into the operations of the national carrier, Air Mauritius, following the suspension of its CEO, Krešimir Kučko, and Chief Finance Officer (CFO) Jean Laval Ah Chip last month.

These suspensions were triggered by allegations of a luxury weekend in Bordeaux accepted by Kučko and Ah Chip, an event financed by an aircraft leasing company closely associated with Air Mauritius.

The original investigation focused on the circumstances surrounding this extravagant weekend getaway. However, recent developments have broadened the scope of the probe, now encompassing a series of contracts awarded by the airline since Kučko’s appointment in December.

Krešimir Kučko, a seasoned aviation executive who previously led Croatia Airlines and Gulf Air, temporarily stepped down from his role pending the ongoing investigation. While initial allegations revolved around the acceptance of the lavish hospitality, ICAC’s scrutiny now extends to General Sales Agent contracts inked with prominent foreign firms in various European countries and beyond.

The expanded investigation reflects the ICAC’s intent to scrutinize these contracts thoroughly, aiming to ascertain whether they adhere to the principles of good governance. Air Mauritius having awarded these contracts under Kučko’s leadership, the spotlight is now on the decision-making processes and practices employed during his tenure.

Kučko served as the CEO of Croatia Airlines from 2012 to 2017 before taking the helm at Gulf Air, and later, Air Mauritius.
