TAAG Angola Airlines is taking major strides to enhance both its passenger and cargo services. The national airline of Angola has revealed plans to modernize its fleet with the addition of Boeing 787 Dreamliners while also introducing a Boeing 737-800BCF (Boeing Converted Freighter) to cater to its cargo business.
The airline will acquire four Boeing 787 Dreamliners including two 787-9 and two 787-10 supplied by Boeing. These widebody jets are celebrated for their exceptional fuel efficiency and passenger comfort. Eduardo Fairen, CEO of TAAG Angola Airlines, emphasizes the importance of this step, stating, “Our goal is to work with the best manufacturers in the world towards a multi-type fleet, in order to ensure we have the appropriate airplanes for each flight typology, namely our intercontinental connections.”
With larger windows, improved cabin humidity, lower cabin altitude, spacious overhead bins, soothing LED lighting, and turbulence-detecting technology for a smoother ride, passengers can look forward to an elevated travel experience. Deliveries are scheduled for August 2024.
Anbessie Yitbarek, Boeing’s vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Africa, highlighted the game-changing potential of the Dreamliner, stating, “The 787 Dreamliner will enable TAAG Angola Airlines to open new routes and expand their international network. The Dreamliner’s market-leading efficiency and passenger comfort will advance the carrier’s fleet modernization plans.”
Currently operating a fleet of five 777-300ER (Extended Range) jets, three 777-200ERs, and seven 737-700s across 12 destinations worldwide, TAAG Angola Airlines is poised to strengthen its long-haul operations significantly.
Boeing’s Commercial Market Outlook for Africa forecasts a growing demand for airplanes in the region, estimating a need for 1,025 aircraft over the next two decades. African air traffic is projected to grow at a rate of 7.4%, surpassing the global average growth of 6.1%. This indicates a promising future for airlines like TAAG Angola Airlines that are investing in modern and efficient aircraft.
Cargo Operations Take Flight
Alongside its passenger-focused expansion, TAAG Angola Airlines is making strides in the cargo sector. The airline is in the process of incorporating a Boeing 737-800BCF into its fleet, a converted freighter based on a 2000-vintage 737-800 airframe (33552, ex-Ryanair). While specific details about cargo routes and operations are forthcoming, it’s clear that TAAG is diversifying to serve various flight typologies, including cargo services.
With this addition, TAAG is set to become the eighth African carrier to take delivery of a 737-800 freighter and the third to operate the BCF conversion.
