Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have reached an agreement to put an end to the ongoing diplomatic spat that saw the UAE impose a visa ban on Nigerian travelers and the suspension of flights by Emirates Airlines and Etihad Airlines. This breakthrough comes after a meeting between Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi.

The Resolution of a Prolonged Dispute

The prolonged dispute, which had its roots in financial disagreements, significantly impacted travel and trade between the two nations. Emirates Airlines had suspended its flights to Nigeria due to challenges repatriating funds from the West African nation. In response, the UAE stopped issuing visas to Nigerian travelers, further straining relations.

President Tinubu’s diplomatic efforts bore fruit during his visit to Abu Dhabi, where he and uAE President Al Nahyan finalized an agreement that marks a turning point in these bilateral relations.

Visa Ban Lifted and Flight Resumption

Consequently, UAE has immediately lifted the visa ban on Nigerian travelers. This means that Nigerians can once again travel to the UAE without facing visa restrictions. Additionally, both Emirates Airlines and Etihad Airlines are set to resume their flight schedules to and from Nigeria without further delays. This development is sure to be welcomed by travelers and businesses that rely on these routes for connectivity and trade.

Importantly, this resumption of flight activities and the lifting of the visa ban do not involve any immediate financial obligations on the part of the Nigerian government.

The meeting between the two heads of state also resulted in an agreement to foster economic collaboration. The UAE is poised to make substantial investments in Nigeria’s economy, spanning various sectors including defense and agriculture. These investments are expected to be valued in the billions of U.S. dollars, indicating a strong commitment to boosting economic ties.

Furthermore, President Tinubu successfully negotiated a joint foreign exchange liquidity program between the two governments. The details of this program will be announced in the coming weeks, and it holds the potential to ease foreign exchange challenges experienced by businesses operating between the two countries.

In his statement, President Tinubu commended President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his unwavering friendship and the concerted effort to normalize and elevate the standards of relations between the UAE and Nigeria.
