Ethiopia is set to witness a milestone in its aviation industry as One MRO Service secures its license from the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority, paving the way for the nation’s first privately owned aircraft maintenance provider, reports Ethiopian monitor.

Based in Addis Ababa, One MRO Service has received certification to perform maintenance on Boeing 737 Classic and NG aircraft types. Currently providing maintenance services to Nigerian carriers, the company has ambitious plans to establish a dedicated MRO facility in Ethiopia, targeting local privately owned airlines.

This development places One MRO Service in competition with the state-owned Ethiopian MRO, which serves its parent, Ethiopian Airlines, as well as third-party customers.

According to Aviation Week, One MRO Service offers a range of maintenance services, including line maintenance, AOG (Aircraft on Ground) recovery, engine replacement, and aircraft structural repairs. Notably, its commercial airline customers include Nigerian carrier Max Air and Sky Mali.

While Ethiopian MRO also offers similar services, its capabilities extend to heavy maintenance on a broader range of aircraft, including the Airbus A350, Boeing 737, 767, 777, and 787, as well as the De Havilland Canada Dash 8 series. Ethiopian MRO also possesses the expertise to perform overhauls of CFM56-7B and PW150 engines.

Ethiopian MRO’s extensive customer portfolio in the region includes ASKY Airlines, Malawi Airlines, Tchadia Airlines, RwandAir, Jambojet, and Zambia Airways. The facility boasts multiple hangars, including a closed-door hangar for widebodies, open-door hangars for narrowbodies, and dedicated space for Dash 8 turboprops.

One MRO Service’s entry into Ethiopia’s aviation maintenance landscape is poised to enhance competition and potentially lead to increased service offerings for airlines operating in the region. As they expand their operations, the Ethiopian aviation industry can anticipate a positive impact on maintenance quality and efficiency.
