South African Airways Will Expand Fleet to 25 Aircraft in 2025

South African Airways (SAA) has achieved a significant milestone by expanding its fleet to 20 aircraft, marking a remarkable recovery since emerging from business rescue with just six planes in 2021. The addition of two leased Airbus A320 narrow-body aircraft within the past two weeks underscores SAA’s commitment to sustainable growth and its evolving role in the regional and international aviation landscape.

A Strategic Comeback
Interim CEO Professor John Lamola expressed pride in the airline’s progress, stating:

“These additional aircraft will enable SAA to continue fulfilling our promise to add seat capacity in both the domestic and regional market and thereby contribute to the affordability of passenger air travel.”

This growth strategy is particularly notable given the current challenges faced by the global aviation industry. A post-COVID-19 supply chain crisis has caused delays in new aircraft deliveries, while the scarcity of second-hand aircraft has driven up acquisition costs. SAA’s ability to secure aircraft through a partnership with AerCap, the world’s largest aircraft leasing company, highlights the restoration of the airline’s creditworthiness with international aviation financiers.

Fleet Composition and Route Enhancements
The expanded fleet now comprises a mix of narrow-body Airbus A320s, wide-body A330s, and long-range A343s. This diversity supports the airline’s operational goals, including servicing intercontinental routes relaunched last year, such as Johannesburg to São Paulo, Perth, and Cape Town to São Paulo.

The airline’s network expansion has been complemented by increased flight frequencies:

  • Dar es Salaam: A new connection to Johannesburg launched  January 20, 2025.
  • Harare (Zimbabwe): Increased to 12 flights per week, up from 10.
  • Lusaka (Zambia): Now operating 12 weekly flights, up from seven.
  • Lagos (Nigeria) & Accra (Ghana): Flights increased to four times weekly.
  • Kinshasa & Lubumbashi (DRC): Flights to Kinshasa increased to five times weekly, while services to Lubumbashi, launched in November 2024, continue to strengthen trade links in the DRC.

Cargo Operations: Connecting Economic Hubs
In addition to passenger services, SAA Cargo plays a pivotal role in facilitating trade across Africa and beyond. This capability aligns with the airline’s broader objective of connecting economic hubs and supporting intra-African trade, a key driver for economic development on the continent.

Future Outlook
Looking ahead, SAA plans to add five more aircraft to its fleet during the 2025 calendar year. The airline aims to consolidate its operations by increasing flight frequencies on its existing route network while exploring new opportunities to meet the needs of South African leisure and business travelers.

Professor Lamola emphasized the importance of these developments, stating:

“SAA is entering a phase of consolidation, ensuring that our customers enjoy more direct access to major African cities while contributing to the growth of the regional aviation sector.”
