The Nigerien government has announced plans to establish a new national airline as well as a regional carrier under the Alliance of Sahel States (ASS), marking a significant step toward improving air connectivity within the country and across the region.
According to the Nigerien News Agency, Niger’s Minister of Transport and Equipment, Colonel Salisu Mahaman Salisu, has directed the National Civil Aviation Authority to ease certain regulatory provisions to facilitate the swift establishment of these airlines. A special commission has been formed to expedite the issuance of necessary documentation, ensuring a smoother and faster setup process.
Strengthening Regional and Domestic Connectivity
The initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance transport corridors linking Niger with its neighbors, as well as to improve domestic mobility. This move comes at a critical time when land and air transport infrastructure in the Sahel region is undergoing transformation to bolster economic growth and security cooperation.
The establishment of a regional airline aligns with the goals of the Alliance of Sahel States (ASS)—a coalition formed in September 2023 by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger—which aims to promote economic integration and collective security against Islamist insurgencies in the region. A recent development within the alliance has been the approval of a regional passport, allowing citizens of the three countries to move freely across borders.
