Russia is gearing up to mass-produce the latest edition, the Ilyushin Il-96-400M – passenger version of the Il-96-400T cargo aircraft – as the country seeks to strengthen its domestic aviation industry amidst Western sanctions. With a prototype of the Il-96-400M currently in preparation for its maiden flight, Russia aims to meet the demand for homegrown commercial airliners. This move comes in the wake of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has led to sanctions on Russian carriers and highlighted the importance of self-reliance for the nation’s aviation sector.

Russian Cargo Airline Air Bridge Cargo Seeks a Comeback

Air Bridge Cargo, a Russian cargo airline, is looking to stage a comeback with the introduction of the Ilyushin Il-96-400. The airline’s operations have been impacted by Western sanctions, prompting the need for a solution to circumvent the restrictions. While Air Bridge Cargo is currently focused on the older generation Il-96-400T, progress has been made in the development of the newer variant, the Il-96-400M, which boasts an additional length of 9.35 meters.

Prototype Preparation and Production Plans

The Il-96-400M prototype is currently being readied for its maiden flight in Voronezh. The state aircraft construction consortium UAC has been diligently working on the aircraft, which has experienced a series of ups and downs. Initially, Russia had planned for series production of the modernized four-engine Il-96. However, in November 2020, the plan was halted, and the existing modernized examples were intended to remain as unique aircraft.

The imposition of Western sanctions following Russia’s actions in Ukraine has compelled the country to rely on its own aircraft production. Alongside the Superjet 100, the Irkut MS-21, and a modernized Tupolev Tu-214, Russia intends to manufacture two to three Il-96-400M aircraft each year.

Enhancements and Features of the Il-96-400M

The modernized Il-96-400M will feature state-of-the-art cockpit and communication systems, differentiating it from its predecessor. However, the aircraft will retain the old components for its fuselage, wings, and engines. The UAC states that the Il-96-400M will have a range of 10,000 kilometers and will be capable of accommodating 386 passengers in a two-class configuration. This updated version aims to overcome the shortcomings of its less successful predecessor, which saw limited sales with only 30 units produced.

The development of the Ilyushin Il-96-400M has received significant investment from the Russian government, totaling $57.4 million since 2017. This financial commitment underscores Russia’s determination to strengthen its aviation industry and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers amidst geopolitical challenges. By nurturing its homegrown aircraft manufacturing capabilities, Russia aims to secure its aviation sector’s stability and resilience in the face of global uncertainties.
