Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) is set to resume its flights to Africa for the winter season of 2023-2024 after a hiatus of several decades. The airline will introduce two seasonal routes from Denmark and Sweden to Agadir, Morocco, marking its return to the African airspace.
The decision to include Agadir as a destination comes as a response to the growing demand for warm-weather getaways during the Scandinavian winter. Agadir is a popular choice among European tourists seeking pleasant beaches, a warm climate, and a range of activities such as surfing, golfing, and experiencing the rich Moroccan gastronomy.
Erik Westman, the Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at SAS, expressed his excitement about the reopening of African routes, stating, “We are excited to see the world traveling again, and it’s with great pleasure we can offer new destinations this coming winter. Adding beautiful Agadir to our network means we will fly to Africa again for the first time in decades.”
SAS will operate the flights to Agadir from both Copenhagen Airport in Denmark and Stockholm Arlanda Airport in Sweden. The service will commence on November 4, 2023, and continue on a weekly basis until March 2024. The flights will be operated using Airbus A320neo aircraft, featuring a configuration of 180 seats across two classes: SAS Plus and SAS Go.
The resumption of flights to Africa by SAS marks a significant milestone for the airline, which has not operated in the African airspace for nearly two decades. The last SAS operation in Africa was in April 2006, with a non-stop service between Copenhagen and Cairo.
