Swiss leisure carrier Edelweiss Air is increasing its planned non-stop service between Zurich and Windhoek, underscoring growing European demand for travel to Namibia and strengthening the country’s international air connectivity.
The airline confirmed it will increase frequencies on the route from two to three weekly flights beginning 15 July 2026, just weeks after launching the service on 1 June 2026. The flights are being operated using the Airbus A350-900.
Edelweiss had initially announced the Zurich-Windhoek route as a twice-weekly seasonal operation running through the end of October 2026, marking the airline’s first direct service to Namibia.
The rapid addition of a third weekly frequency signals strong confidence in the market and reflects broader momentum in Namibia’s tourism and connectivity strategy.
Namibia Airports Company CEO and Air Connect Namibia Chairman Bisey Uirab welcomed the expansion, describing it as a significant boost for the country’s international accessibility.
The route forms part of a broader Lufthansa Group presence in Namibia. Combined with services operated by sister carrier Discover Airlines, the Lufthansa Group is expected to offer up to 13 weekly direct flights between Europe and Namibia during peak periods.
For Namibia, the Edelweiss expansion represents another important step in rebuilding and diversifying long-haul air access following the disruptions of the pandemic years. The country has increasingly positioned itself as a premium tourism destination centered around safari travel, desert landscapes, adventure tourism, and high-end experiential travel.
The flights are also expected to support wider regional tourism flows across Southern Africa, with Windhoek serving as a gateway to destinations including Etosha National Park, the Namib Desert, Botswana, and Victoria Falls.
The use of the Airbus A350-900 is notable, reflecting the growing deployment of next-generation long-haul aircraft on African leisure routes as airlines seek greater fuel efficiency and improved economics on thinner intercontinental markets.
The development also highlights the rising importance of route development partnerships across Africa. Air Connect Namibia, a collaborative initiative involving public and private stakeholders, has played a central role in attracting new international airlines and expanding Namibia’s global connectivity.
