In a bold move that signals its long-term ambition to position itself among the world’s leading intercontinental carriers, Uganda Airlines has announced plans to acquire Africa’s first Airbus A380, a pre-owned example of the world’s largest passenger aircraft.
According to senior officials familiar with the development, the double-deck jet will be deployed on high-demand long-haul routes, including Entebbe–London and Entebbe–Dubai, as the airline seeks to expand capacity and elevate its global competitiveness.
The aircraft is expected to feature a three-class configuration, including an upgraded business class product and a newly introduced premium economy cabin—marking a significant step up in onboard experience for the national carrier.
“This is about thinking big and positioning Uganda as a serious player in global aviation,” a source close to the airline’s strategic planning team said. “The A380 allows us to move more passengers efficiently while showcasing a world-class product.”
The move comes as global manufacturers such as Airbus wind down production of the A380 program, making the acquisition both a rare opportunity and a symbolic statement of intent.
Industry analysts note that while the aircraft’s size and operating economics have posed challenges for many carriers, its deployment on dense, high-yield routes could align with Uganda Airlines’ long-term hub ambitions for Entebbe International Airport.
Further details on delivery timelines, financing, and route rollout are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
Happy April Fools 😉
