In a significant boost to Indian Ocean regional aviation, Madagascar Airlines and Air Austral have signed a codeshare and Special Prorate Agreement (SPA) aimed at strengthening air connectivity between Madagascar, La Réunion, and broader international destinations.
The agreement, officially unveiled today, is a major milestone in the revival of cooperation between the two airlines and is set to redefine travel options across the southwestern Indian Ocean. The move aligns with broader goals to position both airlines as key regional players while enhancing their respective market access.
Seamless Travel and Broader Networks
Under this new arrangement, Madagascar Airlines passengers will be able to book Air Austral-operated flights between La Réunion and major Malagasy cities such as Antananarivo, Antsiranana, Nosy Be, Toamasina, and more—all under Madagascar Airlines’ flight codes (MD).
In return, Air Austral gains access to Madagascar Airlines’ extensive domestic network, connecting its passengers to more remote Malagasy destinations, including those not typically served by international carriers. This significantly increases travel convenience for tourists, business travelers, and local residents alike.
Additionally, passengers from Madagascar now enjoy enhanced international connectivity, including one-stop access to Bangkok and Johannesburg via Air Austral’s hub in Réunion, a key node in the Indian Ocean aviation ecosystem.
Launch of a Unique Inter-Island Route
A highlight of the agreement is the creation of a new inter-island route:
La Réunion – Toamasina – Sainte-Marie (RUN–TMM–SMS). This unprecedented link will not only open new leisure corridors, especially for La Réunion’s outbound market, but also support tourism to Sainte-Marie, one of Madagascar’s most scenic island destinations known for its whale migration experiences and pristine beaches.
The route structure is smartly optimized: Air Austral will operate the Réunion–Toamasina segment, while Madagascar Airlines will handle the onward connection to Sainte-Marie, ensuring seamless interline travel under one ticket.
A Strategic Win for Both Carriers
Thierry de Bailleul, CEO of Madagascar Airlines, said the agreement is an important part of the airline’s long-term Phénix 2030 transformation roadmap, supported by the World Bank:
“This partnership gives our passengers more flexibility, greater choice, and continuity of service between the islands and beyond. It boosts Madagascar’s visibility as a unique destination and connects our country to global tourism, business, and cultural exchanges.”
Hugues Marchessaux, Chairman of the Management Board of Air Austral, emphasized the deeper significance of the collaboration:
“This agreement reflects the closeness of two neighboring islands that share a common history. It aligns with Air Austral’s development strategy to offer our customers high-quality interline partnerships that expand travel opportunities. We are particularly excited about connecting our passengers to Sainte-Marie and the marvels of Madagascar.”
Broader Context: A Regional Aviation Renaissance
This renewed partnership comes amid a wider resurgence of regional cooperation in African and Indian Ocean aviation, where collaborative models are increasingly seen as a solution to fragmented air services and underserved markets.
For Madagascar Airlines, the codeshare supports its efforts to rebuild trust, improve service quality, and regain profitability after a turbulent period. Backed by World Bank reforms, the airline is undergoing a transformation focused on modernizing its ATR 72 fleet, digitalizing its operations, and re-establishing its international partnerships.
Air Austral, meanwhile, is cementing its reputation as a key Indian Ocean connector, offering seamless access to European cities through its Paris-CDG hub and to Asian capitals in collaboration with partners like Thai Airways.
The codeshare is also expected to stimulate tourism flows between Réunion and Madagascar, both of which are rich in biodiversity and cultural heritage but often poorly connected. With Sainte-Marie now just a short hop away from Réunion, this route could become a tourism game-changer.
