Ethiopian Airlines has partnered with the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to establish Air Congo, a new national carrier aimed at enhancing air connectivity within the DRC and across Central Africa.
Air Congo commenced operations in December 2024 with two Boeing 737-800 aircraft, initially serving seven domestic airports.
This collaboration aligns with Ethiopian Airlines’ Vision 2035 strategy, which seeks to establish multiple hubs across Africa. It complements existing partnerships with ASKY Airlines in Lomé, Malawi Airlines in Lilongwe, and Zambia Airways in Lusaka.
Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew stated, “The launch of Air Congo is a significant step in our strategic plan to collaborate with African governments and enhance air transport across the continent. This partnership will provide greater connectivity for the DRC and Central Africa, facilitating investment, trade, and tourism, thereby contributing to the socio-economic growth of the region.”
Key technical agreements, including aircraft leases, comprehensive technical support, and systems support, have been signed between the partners. Ethiopian Airlines will also train Congolese nationals as pilots, cabin crew, sales and services staff, and technicians, contributing to local capacity building and job creation.
The establishment of Air Congo is expected to improve domestic air travel within the DRC, a country with vast geographical challenges and limited transportation infrastructure. By enhancing connectivity, the airline aims to support economic development and regional integration.
