IndiGo, India’s leading low-cost carrier, is set to make its mark on the African continent with the launch of new flight routes.

The airline has revealed plans to expand its international operations by venturing into Central Asia and Africa, targeting key destinations such as Nairobi, Kenya. With a robust fleet expansion strategy and a significant growth outlook, IndiGo aims to establish itself as a major player in the African aviation market. This move is expected to bring numerous benefits to African travelers and foster increased connectivity between India and Africa.

New Flight Routes

IndiGo’s expansion into Africa will be marked by the launch of a new flight route from Mumbai. The airline plans to commence services to Nairobi, Kenya in late July or early August. This new route will enhance both business and leisure travel opportunities, further strengthening the bilateral ties between India and Kenya.

At the moment, there are only three nonstop routes linking India and Kenya, highlighting the untapped potential for growth and improved connectivity between the two countries. Kenya Airways operates Mumbai-Nairobi twice a day, Air India connects Delhi and Nairobi three times per week, and Rwandair links Mumbai and Mombasa as part of a Mumbai-Mombasa-Kigali routing.

“With this expansion in our network, we will now be directly touching 32 international destinations (up from 26), next to our 78 domestic destinations,” IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers says.

To accommodate its expansion plans, IndiGo will be adding 40 new aircraft to its fleet in the current fiscal year. Despite challenges in the supply chain, the airline remains confident in meeting its capacity targets. IndiGo anticipates carrying 100 million passengers in the current fiscal year, surpassing the pre-pandemic levels of 75 million passengers per year., according to the CEO.
