Ethiopian Airlines announced earlier this week that it has partnered with International Djibouti Industrial Park Operation (IDIPO) and Air Djibouti to commence a Sea-air multimodal transportation between China and Africa.

The airline disclosed that the agreement will see cargo being transported from Chinese destinations to Djibouti Free Zone by sea and then uplifted by air from Djibouti International Airport saving both time and energy logistically, as well as boosting the growth of the cargo market in Africa.

“The transportation deal enables traders to order their products from China to Africa via Djibouti port and ET facilitates the air movement of goods to different parts of Africa through its vast network,” the airline said in a statement.

The ‘New Alternative’

The often lauded ‘new alternative’ offers most effective sea-air solutions designed to move the freight to where the most appropriate air freight capacity and routing is available, at the most attractive cost.

As Ethiopia is landlocked, its main sea outlet, Djibouti port, currently serves as the main cargo logistics operation hub for the sea-air freight flight operations between destinations in China and the African continent.

Ethiopian said the new multimodal logistics solution will enable African businesses, multinational companies, Chinese companies and other business people to enhance their supply chain management system with the best combination of speed, cost and quality services.

Ethiopian also noted that it has been involved in the operation and development of sea/ air services years before, via established and proven hubs in Dubai, providing resilience against disruption and additional routing options for speed and cost options.

“The markets of China and Africa are highly complementary and the partnership has huge potential in facilitating cost and time efficient logistics solutions for African traders,” the carrier said.

“As the world’s production base, China is the largest supplier, while Africa with a population of 1.3bn people has a huge market demand.

“China has been Africa’s largest trading partner with a trade volume of $254bn in 2021.”
