Zambia Airways  has set 30th September 2021 as the planned date for start of commercial operations and has now dispatched five local pilots to the Ethiopian Aviation Academy for training.

According to the country’s industrial development corporation, all selected crew for the training are Zambian nationals who are going to familiarize themselves with aircraft types planned for the Zambia Airways fleet.

In addition to the flight crew members, 25 cabin crew members have already undergone training at the Ethiopian Aviation Academy and are awaiting deployment.

On the occasion of bidding farewell to the pilots, Zambia Airways CEO Bruk Endeshaw said the airline would ensure that it employs Zambian nationals in its operational areas.

It’s a huge milestone for Zambia Airways to begin operations and having you as our flight crew. You are the first batch of five flight crew to familiarize yourselves with the type of aircraft you will be using. As Zambia Airways is a national carrier we want it to be operated by Zambian nationals. We are lucky to have you as our flight crew,” said Mr Endeshaw.

The new airline comes 11 years after Zambian Airways ceased operations in 2009. The new project is a joint venture between Zambia’s state owned Industrial Development Corporation (IDC)  which owns 55% and Ethiopian Airlines.

IDC Group chief executive officer Mateyo Kaluba applauded the board on the milestone of setting a launch date and urged the carrier’s management to bring pride to the country

“I strongly urge the board and management to manage the airline in accordance with international best practice. They have the responsibility to make Zambia Airways an airline that will bring pride and jobs to the Zambian people,” he said.

Zambia Airways was granted an Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) by the Zambian Civil Aviation Authority in September 2020 and is expected to fly aircraft sourced from JV partner, Ethiopian Airlines including De Havilland Canada Q400s and a Boeing 737-800
