Skytrax is a United Kingdom-based aviation research and consulting company that conducts customer surveys on airlines and airports and publishes reviews and awards. Originally known as Inflight Research Services, its World Airport Awards began in 1999.
Surveys are conducted online and involves millions of responses each year. Suspect or duplicate entries from the same IP address are rejected. Surveys are conducted in English, Spanish and Chinese and involves more than 100 customer nationalities participating.
The Survey consists of nearly 40 questions asking people to rate their experience on a scale of 1 to 5 with topics ranging from airport accessibility, staff friendliness and language skills, waiting time at security and immigration, terminal appearance, comfort and ease of navigation, and services such as restaurants, lounges, showers and hotels.
The 2021 World Airport Awards include a special, additional category of 2021 COVID-19 Airport Excellence Awards, which recognises the many changes and improvements made by airports worldwide to improve health, hygiene and safety standards during COVID-19.
It was conducted from August 2020 until July 2021, with many travellers voting for their favourite / best airport based on pre-pandemic travel experiences, whilst other customers voted after their COVID-19 Airport Experience during the past 12 months.

Hamad International Airport rounded off its success at the 2021 World Airport Awards by winning the awards for the Best Airport in the Middle East, the World’s Best Airport in the 25 to 35 million Passenger category, and for the Best Airport Staff in the Middle East

The top rated airport in Africa is Cape Town International Airport in South Africa. The airport retains its top position in the continent but slightly drops from its global position (No. 24 in 2020 to No. 34 in 2021).
