Uganda Airlines has officially launched scheduled flights to Accra, Ghana, and Kigali, Rwanda, marking another milestone in the national carrier’s regional expansion strategy as it strengthens its footprint across Africa.
The new services expand Uganda Airlines’ intra-African network and reinforce its ambition to position Entebbe International Airport as a growing regional hub connecting East, West and Southern Africa. The launches come as the airline accelerates network growth following recent fleet expansion plans and a landmark agreement to acquire new Boeing aircraft.
The addition of Accra is particularly significant, giving Uganda Airlines its first direct link to Ghana and strengthening connectivity between East and West Africa, one of the continent’s most underserved aviation corridors. The route is expected to support business travel, tourism, trade and government traffic while providing passengers with an alternative to traditional one-stop connections through Nairobi, Addis Ababa or Kigali.
The new Kigali service, meanwhile, further deepens regional integration within the East African Community (EAC), providing additional capacity on one of East Africa’s busiest business and diplomatic corridors.
The expansion reflects Uganda Airlines’ continued focus on building an Africa-centred network before pursuing wider long-haul growth. Since its relaunch in 2019, the carrier has steadily expanded across the continent, adding destinations including Johannesburg, Lagos, Abuja, Kinshasa, Lusaka, Harare and Juba, alongside long-haul services to London and Mumbai.
The latest route launches also align with broader continental efforts under the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) to improve intra-African connectivity and reduce reliance on indirect routings through non-African hubs.
For Uganda Airlines, the move comes at a pivotal moment. The airline recently secured government backing for a major fleet renewal programme that includes an order for 10 Boeing aircraft, a decision expected to reshape its network strategy over the next decade by adding greater capacity and longer-range capability.
The new Accra and Kigali services are expected to strengthen Entebbe’s position as a connecting hub while improving access between East and West Africa, one of the fastest-growing but least connected air travel markets on the continent. As Uganda Airlines continues executing its growth strategy, the latest additions underscore its ambition to become a larger regional player in African aviation.
