Cabo Verde Airlines Resumes U.S. Service with Providence Route

Cabo Verde Airlines is set to resume flights to the United States, launching a new transatlantic service to Providence, Rhode Island, in a move that underscores the airline’s strategy of targeting niche diaspora markets.

The route will commence on May 4, 2026, with one weekly frequency, increasing to twice weekly from June 5, 2026. The service will operate via a triangular routing from Praia to Sal and onward to Providence, reconnecting the island nation with the U.S. East Coast.

The schedule will see the flight depart Praia early in the morning, stop in Sal, and continue onward to Providence, arriving in the early afternoon local time.

The choice of Providence over larger U.S. gateways reflects a deliberate strategy.

Rhode Island and the broader New England region host one of the largest Cabo Verdean diaspora communities in the United States, with strong cultural, family, and economic ties to the islands. By targeting Providence, the airline is positioning itself closer to its core customer base rather than competing directly in more congested hubs such as Boston or New York.

The move also highlights a broader trend among smaller carriers, which are increasingly focusing on underserved niche routes where demand is concentrated but not always visible in traditional hub-and-spoke models.

Cabo Verde Airlines has historically relied on its geographic position in the Atlantic as a connecting bridge between Africa, Europe, and the Americas. However, in recent years, the airline has faced operational and financial challenges, leading to a more focused and pragmatic network strategy.

The relaunch of U.S. services marks a cautious step in rebuilding its long-haul network, with a model centered on targeted demand rather than scale.
