South African Airways Strike Ends, Pilots Secure Pay Raise

South African Airways (SAA) announced the resumption of normal operations after a two-day strike by its pilots concluded in the early hours of December 7, 2024. The strike, organized by the South African Airways Pilots Association (SAAPA), was called off after management agreed to a 9.47% pay increase, narrowly averting further disruption during the busy festive season.

Details of the Strike

The strike began on December 5, after prolonged negotiations over pay and working conditions failed to reach an agreement. Initially, SAAPA demanded a 30% increase in May, later reducing the request to 15.7%. SAA countered with an 8.46% offer. This disagreement led to the strike, which disrupted flights and threatened SAA’s reputation during peak travel season.

Negotiations intensified during the strike, culminating in a revised offer of a 9.47% salary adjustment. Pilots returned to work after the deal was accepted, marking the end of a tense standoff.

Context and Challenges

The dispute highlighted lingering tensions from SAA’s turbulent past. During the airline’s business rescue process in 2019–2021, pilot salaries were halved, while other staff faced 10% reductions. Despite the airline’s emergence from rescue and its first profit in over a decade earlier this year, SAA continues to grapple with financial challenges. Interim CEO Professor John Lamola emphasized that the airline could not revert to historically lucrative pilot benefits without jeopardizing its fragile recovery

Background of SAA’s Financial Struggles

SAA has been a cornerstone of South Africa’s aviation industry but has faced chronic financial instability for years. In December 2019, the airline entered business rescue, leading to widespread restructuring, job cuts, and service downsizing. Following its exit from rescue in 2021, the airline adopted a leaner operational model, including scaling back routes and reducing its workforce.

The latest strike underscores the delicate balance SAA must maintain between financial prudence and retaining skilled employees. Pilot discontent over pay disparities and a lack of post-rescue recovery has been simmering, with SAAPA citing the need to address these issues to prevent talent attrition

Looking Ahead

The resolution of the strike is a short-term win for SAA, but long-term challenges remain. As the airline works to stabilize its finances, it must also rebuild employee trust while navigating South Africa’s competitive aviation landscape. Management has pledged to maintain open lines of communication with stakeholders to prevent future disruptions
