Air Algérie has unveiled plans to launch a new direct flight route connecting Algiers to Johannesburg, South Africa, with two flights per week commencing September 21. The anticipated 9-hour and 30-minute journey will be facilitated by Airbus A330-200 aircraft, heralding a significant expansion of Air Algérie’s international network.

Air Algérie spokesperson, Amine Andaloussi, revealed that the official inauguration of this route is scheduled for August 21, a month ahead of the maiden commercial flight. The flights for this route are strategically scheduled to operate on Sundays and Thursdays.

This move aligns with the directives of Algeria’s President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aimed at bolstering Air Algérie’s global reach while fostering the growth of Algiers Hub. The initiative is also aligned with the Ministry of Transport and the national airline’s strategy to establish connections that position Air Algérie favorably within the African market.

The Algiers-Johannesburg route holds immense significance, as it directly links two key entry points into the African continent. According to Andaloussi, this route will facilitate seamless travel for passengers from South Africa and neighboring nations, who can effortlessly transit through Algiers Hub en route to various destinations in Europe, Asia, North America, and South America.

Moreover, the inauguration of this route is expected to fortify the role of Algiers Airport as a pivotal hub in the region. It aligns with Air Algérie’s broader international flight program, including a robust schedule of 200 weekly flights to France.

This strategic move sets the stage for further route launches by Air Algérie, including connections to Libreville (Gabon), Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Abuja (Nigeria), Douala (Cameroon), Amsterdam (Netherlands), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Hong Kong (China), New York (United States of America), Caracas (Venezuela), and Havana (Cuba).
