Uganda Airlines has received permission from the Rwandan government to begin direct flights from Entebbe to Kigali, marking an important milestone in the recent history of the airline.

The announcement was made on March 24th during the eleventh Rwanda-Uganda Joint Permanent Commission (JPC) in Kigali, where the two countries discussed ways to improve trade and movement between them.

JeJe Odongo, Uganda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, welcomed the decision, stating that it would “further boost trade, enhance connectivity, and contribute to strengthening people-to-people exchanges.” His Rwandan counterpart, Vincent Biruta, confirmed the development, which is expected to have a significant impact on the economies of both countries.

Uganda Airlines resumed operations in August 2019, after a nearly 20-year hiatus. Since then, the airline has been expanding its network and fleet, and the new route to Kigali is an important addition. The airline is currently pursuing the necessary Foreign Air Operator Certificate from the Rwandan Civil Aviation Authority, and further announcements about the start of flights are expected in due course.

The move is expected to boost trade between the two countries, as it will make it easier for businesses to transport goods and services across the border. It will also provide greater connectivity for travelers, making it easier for people to visit family and friends, attend conferences and events, and explore the sights and sounds of both countries.

During the three-day JPC, both countries agreed to create an attractive environment for the private sector and to fast track stalled Northern Corridor Integration Projects, such as the Standard Gauge Railway. These initiatives are expected to further strengthen the economic ties between the two countries and contribute to the growth of the aviation industry in the region.
