At the Ethiopian Aviation Forum held in Addis Ababa, Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer presented a compelling case for regional fleet right-sizing and modernization, emphasizing its E-Jets E2 series and E-Freighter conversions as game-changing solutions for Africa’s rapidly evolving aviation market.

Mohamed Khalid, Embraer’s Regional Director for Airline Marketing in the Middle East & Africa, led the presentation which highlighted how Embraer’s strategic product offerings align perfectly with the continent’s demand for efficient, scalable, and sustainable air transport solutions.

A Proven Player in Global Aviation

With over 130 commercial aviation customers in more than 70 countries, Embraer is the world’s third-largest aircraft manufacturer and a dominant force in the 70-150 seat segment. The company currently has over 2,000 aircraft in service globally, with a significant and growing footprint across Africa.

As of early 2025, Embraer aircraft operate in 22 African countries, with 96 E-Jets flying in the region and 22 more on order. Notably, Embraer is the top OEM in its category in the Middle East and Africa, commanding 29% of regional aircraft deliveries in the sub-150-seat segment.

The E2 Series: Right-Sized for Africa

One of the key messages from Embraer’s forum session was that African airlines must “right-size” their fleets to meet current market realities and future growth.

The E190-E2 and E195-E2 jets, the stars of Embraer’s next-generation E2 family offer unmatched economics for short to medium haul routes. The E190-E2, capable of seating around 114 passengers, and the E195-E2, seating up to 146, provide 25% better fuel efficiency compared to their predecessors. This makes them ideal replacements for aging and less efficient narrowbodies and turboprops that dominate many African fleets.

Embraer emphasized that these aircraft reduce per-trip costs while offering similar seat-mile costs to larger narrowbodies like the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737. As David Neeleman, founder of Azul, once said: “You can imagine a plane with a seat-mile cost like the A320neo, but only 136 seats. So trip costs are much better.”

Sustainability and Efficiency at the Forefront

Environmental concerns are increasingly driving airline purchasing decisions. Embraer’s E2 aircraft are the quietest and cleanest jets in their category. Compared to the older E190, the E190-E2 delivers up to 25% lower CO₂ emissions per seat and is certified to Chapter 14 noise standards.

With its optimized wings, fly-by-wire controls, and aerodynamic refinements, the E2 series is not just an upgrade, it represents a paradigm shift in single aisle aviation. For operations from high-altitude airports like Addis Ababa, the E2 aircraft offer excellent range capabilities, flying up to 2,800 nautical miles while maintaining performance.

Cargo Potential: The E-Freighter Vision

Addressing Africa’s growing cargo needs, Embraer also spotlighted its new E-Freighter program. The E190F and E195F converted from E1 passenger aircraft are designed to fill the gap between turboprop freighters and large narrow-body freighters like the 737-800BCF.

These right-sized jets provide lower operating costs, faster speeds, and more flexible loading options, making them ideal for e-commerce distribution and underserved cargo routes across Africa. With over 450 E1s reaching 10+ years of age globally, Embraer believes the feedstock is ripe for an effective conversion program.

Real-World Endorsements and African Relevance

The E2 series has earned widespread praise from operators. Royal Jordanian, KLM, Air Peace (Nigeria), and Azul are just a few of the 18 airlines currently flying E2s. Air Peace’s president Allen Onyema noted that the E-Jets “diversify our routes and offer the connectivity that Africa demands.”

The company’s modular cabin design, praised for passenger comfort and quietness, also won the Crystal Cabin Award for visionary interior design. Notably, the E2 has been operating from constrained airports like London City showing its ability to handle short runways and noise-sensitive environments.

A Wake-Up Call for African Airlines?

The message from Embraer is clear: fleet renewal is no longer optional, it’s essential. African carriers continue to struggle with load factors, profitability, and underperforming routes due in part to poor fleet matching. Embraer’s E2 jets offer African airlines a viable path to sustainable profitability through cost optimization and new route opportunities.

Embraer’s strategy hinges on the idea that growth in Africa doesn’t just mean “bigger” but “better matched.” With unmatched fuel efficiency, maintenance savings, and passenger comfort, the E2 family could be the best-kept secret in regional aviation.
