Air Algérie, the national airline of Algeria, is set to resume its flights to Alicante, Spain, reestablishing a vital link between the two countries.

From July 15 to October 28, 2023, Air Algérie will operate two weekly flights from Oran-Ahmed Ben Bella Airport on Mondays and Saturdays, while flights from Algiers-Houari-Boumediene Airport will be available on Wednesdays. This exciting development marks the return of Air Algérie to Alicante after providing repatriation flights in December 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. With this relaunch, Alicante becomes the fourth Spanish destination served by Air Algérie, joining Madrid, Barcelona, and Palma de Mallorca.

The announcement was made by Air Algérie on its social media channels, generating enthusiasm among travelers. The flights are expected to be in high demand, considering the large Algerian diaspora residing in Spain, particularly in the province of Alicante, which is home to approximately 15,483 Algerians.

Air Algérie will operate these flights using its Boeing 737-800 aircraft, which offers a seating capacity of 16 in Business Class and 132 in Economy Class. The flights will be available for booking through the airline’s sales channels, and passengers will also have the option to connect to domestic destinations within Algeria.

While Air Algérie has gradually resumed its operations to various international destinations, the Spanish market has experienced a reduction in capacity due to the impact of the pandemic. In 2019, Air Algérie operated eight routes to Spain with a total seat capacity of 492,072. However, in 2023, the airline plans to offer approximately 95,052 seats to Spain, reflecting an 80.7% reduction compared to pre-pandemic levels according to Cirium data as reported by Aviacionline.

Despite the decrease in capacity, Air Algérie has strategically redirected its focus to other markets, particularly France, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia, which have contributed to the airline’s international growth. However, Spain remains significant due to its sizable Algerian diaspora, with approximately 63,964 Algerians residing in the country, according to the National Institute of Statistics.

As Algeria begins to open up to international tourism, Air Algérie plays a crucial role as the largest airline connecting Algeria with the rest of the world. With a market share of over 60%, the airline facilitates travel for millions of passengers, including the diaspora in Europe and domestic travelers within Algeria.
