Air Algérie, the national airline of Algeria, has solidified its fleet modernisation plans with the official confirmation of an order for eight Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft. The agreement between Air Algérie and Boeing comes as part of the airline’s ambitious fleet expansion program, which aims to enhance its operational capabilities and provide an elevated travel experience to passengers. The contract signing follows the provisional award announcement made on April 27.
The arrival of the first Boeing 737 MAX 9 is expected in 2027, although specific details regarding the delivery schedule and the total value of the deal have yet to be disclosed. This strategic move aligns with the forward-looking plan approved by Algeria’s president, Abdelmadjid Tebboun, in 2022, which emphasizes the expansion of Air Algérie’s route network, particularly in Africa and Asia, alongside the introduction of new aircraft. The purchase of fifteen new aircraft was approved to gradually replace the airline’s existing fleet.
In April 2023, it was announced that Airbus and Boeing had emerged victorious in the tender initiated by Air Algérie. The European aircraft manufacturer, Airbus, secured a deal to provide seven aircraft, while Boeing, the American aerospace giant, clinched the contract for the remaining eight aircraft. Alongside the Boeing 737 MAX 9 order, Air Algérie is set to acquire five Airbus A330-900 and two A350-1000 aircraft, further diversifying its fleet with modern and efficient wide-body options.
In addition to these direct acquisitions, Air Algérie will also be leveraging leasing arrangements to enhance its capacity during the upcoming summer season. The carrier plans to lease two additional aircraft, augmenting its operations until the new deliveries are completed. The planned lease includes four Airbus A330-200, two A330-900, two Boeing 737-800, and two 737-900 aircraft. According to company sources cited by digital media TSA, these leased aircraft will be in service for a maximum period of five years.
Air Algérie’s fleet modernisation strategy encompasses both narrow-body and wide-body aircraft, aiming to improve efficiency, enhance passenger comfort, and expand the airline’s reach to new destinations. The introduction of the Boeing 737 MAX 9, along with the Airbus A330neo and A350, will position Air Algérie at the forefront of the industry, offering a more advanced and competitive travel experience. As the airline awaits the delivery of its new fleet additions, the upcoming months will see further progress in realizing Air Algérie’s vision of a modern, versatile, and world-class aviation operation.
