Ethiopian Airlines, the largest airline in Africa, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to provide a framework on the provision of Ethiopian Airlines products and services to IGAD.

The MoU aims to facilitate socio-economic ties in the region and achieve the economic cooperation and regional integration that IGAD strives to achieve.

Under the agreement, Ethiopian Airlines will provide hospitality services to IGAD at Ethiopian Skylight Hotel and assign a dedicated team to handle travel and hospitality needs.

Ethiopian Airlines operates more than 20 flights daily to IGAD member states, playing a significant role in the socio-economic development of the region. With a vast network offering convenient access to more than 130 destinations worldwide, the airline is well-positioned to support IGAD in achieving its goals.

Ethiopian Airlines is already making significant strides in supporting regional development. In March 2022, the airline signed a strategic partnership agreement with International Djibouti Industrial Park Operation (IDIPO) and Air Djibouti to commence sea-air multimodal transportation for the expeditious transportation of goods to Africa.

The partnership takes Ethiopian Airlines’ cargo transportation sector to a multimodal level and is set to ease IGAD’s objectives to mobilize resources within the framework of regional cooperation.

Commenting on the signing of the MoU, Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Commercial Officer, Mr. Lemma Yadecha, said, “We are pleased to have signed this agreement with IGAD and play our part in the region’s socio-economic development. Our extensive network offers convenient access to more than 130 destinations worldwide, and we are more than happy to offer that. We believe this agreement further eases IGAD’s objectives to mobilize resources within the framework of regional cooperation.”

The MoU with IGAD is expected to further enhance Ethiopian Airlines’ position as a major player in Africa’s aviation sector. As the largest passenger and cargo destination operating carrier in Africa, the airline is uniquely positioned to support regional development and facilitate economic cooperation and regional integration in the region.

The MoU between Ethiopian Airlines and IGAD is set to facilitate greater socio-economic ties in the region and support economic cooperation and regional integration.
