Entebbe International Airport welcomed 151,653 passengers through its doors in July 2022 (77,056 arrivals and 74,597 departures) which translates to an average of 4,892 passengers per day compared to 4,508 passengers per day recorded the previous month.
The steady increase in passenger numbers is attributed to mainly international arrivals with carriers like Saudia restoring their services to the East African nation.
During the Financial Year 2021/22, a total of 1,244,604 travelers were facilitated through Uganda’s main airport compared to 580,238 in 2020/21 which was adversely affected by the health crisis.
However, this is still down compared to pre-pandemic levels whose passenger traffic was recorded as 1,728,783 in 2018/19 and 1,355,772 in 2019/20.
In comparison, the 2021/22 passenger traffic performance with that of 2018/19 reflects a 71.9% recovery.
In terms of cargo numbers, Entebbe Airport handled about 64,254 metric tonnes (40,961 exports & 23,293 imports) in 2021/22 in comparison to 62,121 metric tonnes in 2018/19. About 60,637 metric tons of cargo were handled in 2019/20 and 63,978 metric tons of cargo in 2020/21 (25,038 imports & 38,940 exports) with major exports being fresh produce including fish, vegetables, and flowers.
Cargo traffic was not affected by the COVID-19 pandemic since cargo operations were maintained even during the 2020 lockdown. The major destinations for Uganda’s cargo produce include Europe, the Middle East, and the far East, among others.
