Air Tanzania, Tanzania’s national airline has been named by the country’s parliamentary Accounts Committee (PAC) as one of the entities that borrowed money from the government without the approval of the Ministry of Finance and Planning as required by the law.

It is reported by the Citizen that a sum totalling shs 896 Billion (USD389 Million) was unlawfully  borrowed by various institutions after a review of the report from the Controller and Auditor General(CAG)

“All institutions that borrowed money without the ministry’s approval are required to repay the debts because we have identified they were not approved by the Finance and planning ministry,” said PAC Vice Chairman, Mr Japhet Hasunga

The parliamentary committee also expressed concern at the criteria used to assess sustainability of debt

The government said criteria would change as Tanzania is currently classified as a middle income country,” he added.
