The Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo is advancing plans for a joint venture airline with Ethiopian Airlines. Recent comments by the country’s minister of transport have revealed the airline will be called Air Congo.
The plan presses ahead despite the country already having a fully government owned flag carrier in Congo Airways
“Back in the United Arab Emirates, I passed through Addis Ababa to give the President of the Republic’s strong message to our Ethiopian friends. We already have in the joint venture that we have envisaged, the name of the new company that we must create under the impetus of the President of the Republic, it will be Air Congo ”, declared Minister of Transport and Communication, Chérubin Okende
The relationship between Air Congo and Congo Airways will be of specific interest. The country’s national Airline, Congo Airways started operations in 2015 and has a fleet of 6 aircraft including 2 recently leased Embraer’s from Kenya Airways and is looking to add 4 brand new modern aircraft from Embraer as it expands.
