Algeria Closes Airspace to all Moroccan Aircraft as Diplomatic Tensions Escalate

In the wake of escalating diplomatic tensions between Algeria and Morocco, Algeria has this week closed its airspace to all Moroccan civil and military aircraft.

Morocco’s national airline, Royal air Moroc has downplayed any significant effects on its operations according to sources, with all affected flights now having to reroute over the Mediterranean. According reuters, an anonymous source confirmed that 15 weekly flights linking Morocco with Tunisia, Turkey and Egypt will be affected

The closure also includes any aircraft carrying a Moroccan registration number

Algeria cut diplomatic ties with Morocco due to what it referred to as “hostile actions” from the Kingdom, referring mainly to comments made by Morocco’s envoy in New York in favor of the self-determination of the Kabylie region in Algeria.

The border between Morocco and Algeria has been closed since 1994
