The Ghanaian Government has completed an agreement to purchase six L-39 next-generation aircraft worth €111 million for the Ghana Armed Forces.

The agreement was laid on Monday in the House of Assembly by the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu on behalf of his colleague, Dominic Nitiwul.

The deal involves AERO Vodochody AIROSPACE a.s. of the Czech Republic as the supplier of support services which will see the company supplying six (6) L-39 Next Generation (L-39NG) aircraft and the provision of support in terms of products, services, and ground-based training systems associated with the aircraft operation.

The agreement has been referred by the Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin to the Defence and Interior Committee for consideration and report.

The Ministry of Defence’s Medium Term Expenditure Framework for 2020-2023 highlighted that as of June 30, 2019, the ministry had overhauled three (3) Casa Aircraft for the Ghana Air Force and Two (2) helicopters which were grounded since 2012.

According to the documents, before end of 2020 plans and agreements have been made to acquire seven aircraft for the Ghana Armed Forces.

Refurbishment of fifteen aircraft used by Ghana Armed Forces by end of the year 2020 was also another government’s plan.

In the 2021 budget, the Government of Ghana disclosed that aiming to strengthen security agency, it was geared to purchase quality and modified equipment for the Armed Forces.

“We awarded a contract for the procurement of high technology communication equipment i.e. Night Vision Binoculars and Monoculars for the GAF to improve night operations,”the statement reads.
