After temporarily halting flights due to the adjusted level 4 restrictions which banned leisure travel to Gauteng Province, home to Johannesburg, LIFT will re-commence its scheduled services from Sunday, August 1.

Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Ayache said, “We’re excited to be back in the air from August 1. It’s been a challenging few weeks for South Africa but with the clean-up under way, travel restrictions being relaxed and progress with the vaccination roll-out, we’re optimistic that demand for travel will return.”

Travel demand was further hampered by riots and widespread looting in Johannesburg and KwaZulu Natal following the incarceration of former President Jacob Zuma on contempt of court.

We look forward to welcoming back our loyal customers, they are at the heart of our business and we’re once again focused on delivering a great customer experience as soon as we’re back on the runway. Customers are welcome to make use of their LIFT wallet credits to book their flights,” he added while noting that bookings were already open for sale.

President Cyril Ramaphosa on July 25 announced the easing of COVID-19 travel restrictions and the acceleration of the country’s COVID-19 vaccination programme with the (youth) joining older age groups already qualifyed for the life-saving jabs, 18 from September 1.

Meanwhile, Comair a British Airways franchise which also operates Kulula will however remain grounded until September 1,  2021.

We anticipate the vaccine roll-out picking up pace in earnest and hope to see it reaching critical mass in the next month or two, and look forward to welcoming our customers back on board on September 1,” noted Comair chief executive Glenn Orsmond.

The airline is also facing financial difficulties and will be seeking additional financial support from its new investors, the Comair Rescue Consortium.
