Morocco Halts Flights to EU Countries amid Surging coronavirus infections

On Monday 30th March, the Morocco government suspended flights to and from France and Spain amid a surge in coronavirus cases, according to a statement from the country’s ministry of Foreign Affairs. The ban is to take effect from Tuesday and for unspecified period of time. Special flights will however be permitted under “reinforced controls” according to the statement.

“As part of the preventive measures adopted by Morocco against the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, passenger flights to and from France and Spain will be suspended as of tomorrow, March 30, 2021, at 11h59 until further notice,” said a spokesman.

Movement between these countries has accelerated before the suspension comes into effect, as the country’s national carrier Royal Air Maroc increased its connections to France and Spain in response to demand

A worrying rise in coronavirus infections around the world has led to countries re-imposing lockdowns to mitigate the spread of the virus. With France rolling back restrictions to combat the new wave of infections, similarly, Kenya recently stepped up lockdown measures that have consequently led to airlines halting some of their domestic services. Kenya has recorded a 20% increase in cases since January.
